Career Path Finder

Career Path Finder is a free, offline-first career discovery tool from SkillGlider. A student types in the skills they already have – Python, SQL, Excel, Figma, anything – and instantly sees which job roles they are closest to, how strong the match is, what those roles pay, and exactly what to learn next. It runs entirely in the browser with no account, no sign-up, and no backend, so any student can use it in seconds.

Problem Statement

Most students know a handful of skills but have no idea which careers those skills actually lead to. Career advice is usually generic ("learn to code", "do data science"), job descriptions are scattered across hundreds of sites, and it is hard to tell how far you are from a role or what gap to close first. Many career tools also demand an account or personal data before showing anything useful.

Proposed Solution

Career Path Finder turns a student's current skills into a ranked list of real career options. Each role is scored against its core and bonus skill requirements, so the student sees not just a job title but how close they already are and which missing skills matter most. Every match opens into a full roadmap, curated resources, resume keywords and a growth ladder, turning "what can I become?" into a concrete next step.

Main Features

  • Skill-based matching – enter your skills and get job roles ranked by a 0–100% match score
  • Weighted scoring: core skills count for 70% and bonus skills for 30% of the match
  • Smart skill input with popular skill chips; abbreviations (JS, ML, K8s) and small typos are recognized automatically
  • Results update instantly as skills are added or removed
  • Each role shows salary range, experience level, and remote / fresher fit
  • Quick filter of results by role title or keyword
  • Full step-by-step roadmap for every role
  • Curated learning resources – courses, books, documentation and certifications (e.g. AWS, CCNA, CEH, CKA, DeepLearning.AI)
  • Portfolio project ideas matched to each role
  • Resume keywords for each role, to get past ATS filters
  • Career growth ladder from entry level to leadership
  • Save career paths, bookmark resources and compare roles side by side
  • Recent searches remembered for returning users
  • Works offline – the matching engine and dataset run locally in the browser
  • Privacy-first: no account, no backend; saved data stays in the browser's local storage

Technical Architecture

Career Path Finder is a single-page, offline-first web app. The roles, skills, salary bands, roadmaps and resource metadata ship as a local JSON dataset, and a client-side matching engine normalizes the user's input (aliases, abbreviations, typo tolerance) and scores every role against its weighted core and bonus skills. Saved paths, bookmarks and recent searches are kept in localStorage, and DOMPurify sanitizes rendered content. Because there is no server, the app loads fast, costs nothing to run, and never sends a student's data anywhere.

System Flow

  1. A student opens Career Path Finder – no sign-up needed
  2. They type their skills or pick from popular skill chips
  3. The engine normalizes the input, recognizing abbreviations and small typos
  4. Every role is scored against its core (70%) and bonus (30%) skills
  5. Matched roles appear ranked, with salary range, experience level and remote/fresher fit
  6. The student opens a role to see its roadmap, resources, resume keywords and growth ladder
  7. They save, bookmark or compare roles to come back to later

Challenges & Solutions

Students describe the same skill in many ways (JS, Javascript, javascript, React.js vs React).

Built an alias and fuzzy-matching layer so abbreviations and small typos still map to the right skill.

A simple keyword overlap made every role look equally good.

Split each role's requirements into core and bonus skills and weighted them 70/30, so the score reflects what actually matters for the job.

Keeping the tool free, fast and private for students.

Designed it offline-first with a bundled JSON dataset and local storage, so there is no backend to pay for and no personal data leaves the device.

Results & Impact

Career Path Finder is live at careerpathfinder.skillglider.in as part of the SkillGlider product family. It gives students an instant, personal answer to "what careers do my skills lead to, and what should I learn next?" – without an account, without cost, and even without an internet connection.

Future Improvements

  • Optional account sync so saved paths follow students across devices
  • Live salary and demand data from job-market sources
  • Deeper hand-off into SkillGlider Roadmap's month-by-month plans
  • AI-assisted skill extraction from an uploaded resume

Key Learnings

  • Designing a weighted scoring model that feels fair to users
  • Fuzzy matching and input normalization
  • Building offline-first, backend-free web apps
  • Structuring a large career and skills dataset
  • Privacy-first product design
